Cubs Fitness Challenge - 25th Januray 2007 - 18/01/2008

The Cubs have started their fitness challenge. Over the next few weeks the cubs will be working on their own and as a pack on this so they can recieve their Fitness Challenge Badge.

From now until 8th Febuary each cub will be working on their own on their own on Part 1. This includes showing how they have done their best in a sport or activity over a two-week period. Each cub has picked their sport or activity and how they can do their best. Each time they take part in this activity they have to record how they tried their best.

Over the next few weeks we will be trying new sports (Part 2) in Cubs. They have yet to be confirmed but so far on the progamme we have Softball, Cricket and Volleyball.

Part 3 will be from the 15th Febuary until the 28th Febuary where each cub will be asked to keep a record of;

-what they eat,

-how much exercise they get and

-how much sleep they get.

They can then have a look at each day and try to improve it.

All the records need to be in by the 29th Febuary so the badges can be handed out by the 7th March.

93rd Cubs Newsletter ? 18th January 2008 - 18/01/2008

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year! I trust that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing break. I am writing to inform you of some of the recent and pending developments from the Cub pack.

Who are you!?
Firstly, I will be taking on short-term leadership of the pack until this summer. For those of you, who don?t know me well; let me explain who I am and what I am about. I?ve been involved with 93rd for the last few months as an Assistant Cub Scout Leader and was involved as a Beaver, Cub and Scout as a young boy. Out with the pack I work as a Youth Worker (particularly working with primary-aged children) for The Salvation Army on Gorgie Road. I am also involved with the Children?s Panel with City of Edinburgh Council. I am very passionate about supporting young people and their parents/carers in a local community context and I count it a true privilege to take on this short appointment.
I would like to thank Louise, who has now moved onto the role of Group Scout Leader, for her work running the pack in the last few months with the support of Allan.

I understand, as this is a short appointment, it may be seen that not much can be done to grow and develop the pack. I would like to use this time wisely by growing membership, enhancing pack and individual skills and qualities, and finally having a fun time!

Growing Membership
The maximum number for a cub pack is 36 members. Currently we are working with a modest group and I would like to see this increase as much as possible over the next few months. The Leaders and I will be working on recruitment with the pack over this term.
If you do know of any children who would like to join us, please do not hesitate to bring them along one evening to ?give it a try?.

With an expectant rise of children we are seeking to recruit new leaders. If you are interested in supporting this pack in this way or know of anyone who else who may be please contact Louise (e-mail: gsl.93rd.pentland@googlemail.com).

Enhancing Individual and Pack Skills and Qualities
Scouting is an adventure. It full of exciting and dynamic learning opportunities and I would like to see this pack doing adventurous, exciting and dynamic activities.
This term we will be working on our Fitness Challenge badge. The cubs will receive the information in the next few weeks o how they can complete this badge. Also this term we will be asking each Cub to complete 1 ? 2 Badges by their self.
Next Term we will be working on the Outdoor Challenge.

If you want to keep up with our programme please have a look at the Website which has all the information on there.

Having a fun time
Above all I would like this pack to be one that is filled to the brim with fun. Over the next few months I will try to ensure that every part of our programme is geared towards a positive and fun environment for the cubs and their leaders.

And now to something not so fun?
The termly subs (£20) are now due. Could you please hand these in as soon as possible. For ease, it would be helpful if you handed them in an envelope with your child?s name clearly marked on it.

I have attached a blank copy of a record card for you to complete. Please can you return this to Alan or I for next week.

Further Communication
As per previous letters we hope to communicate all information through e-mail and our website. It would be helpful if you could familiarise yourself with the site, which will soon have all sorts of exciting and helpful information on it. If we don?t have an up-to-date e-mail address for you please can you hand it in to us by marking it on the Record Card which is to be handed in next week.
Thank you for your support with all these matters and I look forward to an exciting Spring/Summer term. Please feel free to contact me at any time via;
e-mail: 93rdpentlandcubs@edscout.org.uk
phone: 07843 739 558

Dorothy's Brilliant!! - 06/12/2007

Hi All,

We at 93rd Pentland would like to extend our congratulations to Dorothy Jarrett, leader of the Beavers. We've known she was good all along but know it is being officially recognised and would like to thank her for her dedication.

Already the recipient of the Chief Scout's Commendation for Good Service, she has recently been awarded the Medal of Merit.

The Medal of Merit is awarded to those who have had a long period of outstanding service to the Scout Association and in Dorothy?s case it is much deserved.

We look forward to seeing her awarded this at a ceremony in the near future.

Yours in Scouting,

Allan,
93rd ACSL

End Of Term - 02/12/2007

Hi,

Thanks for a great term.

We hope you have all enjoyed it. If not, feel free to post comments at the bottom of this blog (input from the Cubs and Beavers is also wanted!!).

This leaves us with a couple of things:

End of Term Bowling night - You will recieve more information about that next week.

Next Years Term dates - I've posted preliminary term dates for next term for the Cubs. I have no doubt the Beavers will do so soon. So please check out the calendar.

District Merger - 23/11/2007

I realise now, that there may be some confusion over the group name.

As of the 1st of December 2007, the group will merge with four southern groups from Pentland and Almond Valley district to form the new Pentland District. Our number designation will remain the same.

We will keep the old email addresses and have new ones added for the new 93rd Pentland District. Eventually.

I'm sorry for all the extra sowing this will cause you!

Yours in Scouting,

Allan
